The Trial of Chaos tests more than damage. Its modifier choices can expose weaknesses that ordinary encounters rarely punish. Spending POE 2 Orbs on equipment may improve your starting position, but a stronger weapon cannot rescue every combination of penalties. The safest approach is to protect the mechanics your build needs to function.

Identify What Keeps Your Character Alive

Before choosing a modifier, identify your main defensive layer and how you recover after taking damage. A character relying on regeneration faces different risks from one sustained by leech or flasks. Treat any penalty affecting that recovery method as a major threat, especially if encounters already drain your resources.

Consider how much protection remains when something goes wrong. If one missed dodge leaves you nearly defeated, additional incoming damage offers little room for error. Strong recovery matters only when you survive the initial hit.

Mobility deserves the same attention. Movement restrictions and persistent ground hazards can make an otherwise reasonable choice dangerous when your build has lengthy attack animations or limited opportunities to reposition.

Judge Modifiers Through Your Combat Rhythm

A mobile ranged character can often deal damage between movements while keeping enemies at a distance. A close-range character may need to stand beside the same enemies for several attacks. A hazard that merely changes the ranged character's route could repeatedly interrupt the close-range character's entire damage cycle.

Assess damage uptime rather than damage numbers alone. If a modifier forces frequent retreats, ask whether your build continues dealing damage while moving. Builds dependent on stationary casting, setup skills, or short attack windows can lose far more output than their character sheet suggests.

Crowd control also changes the calculation. Slowing or stunning enemies may normally create safe openings. If an available modifier weakens that control, evaluate encounters without assuming those openings will exist. Avoid pairing reduced control with pressures that already demand constant movement.

Review the Whole Run Before Committing

Make your preparation check practical: inspect elemental resistances, life or energy shield, recovery reliability, flask readiness, and movement speed. Confirm that essential skills are usable under pressure and that your damage remains adequate against tougher single targets, not just groups.

Then review every active modifier together. Reduced recovery and extra incoming damage are more dangerous in combination than either description suggests. Likewise, additional hazards become harder to manage when enemies take longer to defeat. Reassess after each selection instead of judging new choices in isolation.

Choose the manageable combination, not the most tempting apparent payoff. If you plan to buy POE 2 Exalted Orbs, prioritize equipment upgrades that address a specific weakness; careful modifier selection still determines whether those improvements translate into a successful run.
